How to deal with perfectionism – My story and tips

I talked a little about my perfectionism a few posts ago, but I never told you the whole story. Since I can remember I’m a perfectionist. I always wanted to do everything as good as I can (read: perfect). I never really saw it as a problem to be honest. But two years ago I started having panic attacks. I was constantly busy in my head. I had to graduate that year, I had a job and I wanted my blog and socials to grow and I did put a lot of effort in all of that. And when I had a moment off, I couldn’t stop thinking about all the things I had to do. I guess I didn’t really relax for quite some time back then.
So in that time I was having a drink with some friends and I suddenly felt shaky and out of breath. I never felt something like that before and it made me really anxious. Turns out that I was having a panic attack. I decided to talk with someone professional to see where this was coming from. At that point I wasn’t really conscious about my thoughts and behaviors. It soon became clear that my perfectionism was the biggest culprit in this whole situation.

Now after 2 years I can honestly say that I feel better than ever. But it did take me quite some time to figure out how to deal with it. I know a lot of people struggle with perfectionism and anxiety these days (especially in the society we live in), so I thought it would be helpful to share my tips on how to deal with perfectionism:

 

  • Start journaling¬†
    Something that really helped me to understand my thoughts and fears is journaling. Just write down what your thinking or what yo
  • Educate yourself
    Like I said I did and thought a lot of thing in my unconsciousness. Reading about mindfulness and all that kind of stuff really helped me to see and understand why I was doing things. And with that knowledge I could start making changes.
  • Work on your beliefs
    Through journaling and educating you
  • Meditate
    Meditating really helps to clear and relax your mind. Try to do some type of meditation everyday (like a bodyscan for example) and you will notice the benefits, I promise you!
  • Exercise
    Another great way that helped me to clear my mind is exercising. You don’t have to go to the gym everyday, just find something you like. Lately I’m in to running, but you can also do yoga for example.
  • Talk with someone
    Whether it’s a professional, a friend or a family member.. If you’re struggling with something it’s really important to talk about it. Usually when I tell my story I get another perspective on the situation. And that’s just by speaking it out loud.
  • Take mini breaks
    Something that really helped me is taking mini breaks throughout the day. So for example grab a cup of coffee and mindfully drink your coffee. It’s important to give your mind some mini breaks throughout the day.
  • Know what you can control and can’t control
    I’m someone who want to control everything. I want to do everything as perfect as I can, even the things that aren’t really my call to make. So something that I learned myself is to stop worrying about things that are out of my control. It takes something to stop worrying about those things, but if you start believing it, it will work!
  • Set deadlines
    This isn’t really something that I was struggling with, but I know a lot of perfectionists can’t finish something because they are constantly improving their work. So if you’re like that, set some strict deadlines and tell someone about your deadlines so you are accountable.
